12/9 - 10

Presenter: Food Studies Conference (Las Vegas, NV)

God, Guns, and Green: Forging Crosscultural Alliances in Sustainable Agriculture

Drumbeat assertions that the sustainability movement is a movement for some, not all, obscure what’s important and limit the ways diverse communities can work together — especially when it comes to food. In the last 30 years, our food supply has become more chemicalized, industrialized, and consolidated than at any other point in history. At the same time, we consumers have substantially less access to information about what’s in our food and how it is made. We all have a vested interest in safe food and healthy communities — but how we manifest, prioritize, and articulate these concerns varies dramatically. The author will detail her work on the psychological barriers to environmental engagement, and make the case for the application of faith as a lens through which to address arguments for and against genetically modified organisms. Borne out of fieldwork in journalism, the author will explain how engagement with people’s most deeply held values and beliefs can help forge a new kind of environmentalism that includes diverse and seemingly unlikely allies including farmers, hunters, laborers, and conservatives. Our relationships with this diverse constituency will define our ability to conserve resources, feed people, and protect our planet.

The program of Slow Money National Gatherings integrates internationally recognized thought leadership, next generation social entrepreneurship, and an environment that fosters shared learning across the full spectrum of backgrounds—from the most sophisticated financiers to individual investors, from farmers to food entrepreneurs.

Given the centrality of food to our mission, all meals feature the best offerings of local organic purveyors. Meals are generously scheduled to offer as much time as possible for food to be enjoyed and for a bit of the conviviality of the table to be experienced.

The program also includes elements of film, music, and Meet the Author sessions, because fixing the economy from the ground up is not only a financial activity, but also a cultural one.
