Since moving to the Midwest from New York City in 2007, I have become cognizant of a rift within the environmental movement. The environment—something we all need to exist—has become a hardened, partisan issue. My main focus for the rest of this year is the completion of a book on the psychological barriers to environmental engagement, to be published by Harper Collins. Co-author Merete Mueller and I asked some of our most dedicated public figures to weigh in (ranging from Robert Redford and Newt Gingrich to Carter Roberts of the World Wildlife Fund and Frances Beinecke of NRDC) in addition to seeking insights from brilliant behavioral psychologists who have helped me uncover why the planet is cleaving left from right and why widespread information has not resulted in widespread engagement.
